The Competency Assessment Certification Scheme for Registered Gas Installers is the Domestic Gas Safety Assessment (DGA). All RGIs must ensure their Domestic Gas Safety Assessment (DGA) is always valid to maintain compliance with industry standards and the RGI Scheme membership rules.
Staying compliant is essential for upholding your professional registration and ensuring safety in the gas sector. This formal, accredited assessment verifies your competency in domestic gas safety and must be renewed every five years through an Accredited Assessment Centre.
Your DGA is a critical element of your registration as an RGI. According to Section C 4.1.2 of the Criteria Document version 1.7 and Section 10.2 of the Rules of Registration, RGIs are required to complete this assessment every five years to maintain their status and remain compliant with the RGI Scheme membership rules.
Failure to keep your DGA up to date will lead to immediate suspension which will jeopardize your ability to operate as an RGI. By renewing your DGA proactively, you ensure your continued registration and demonstrate your commitment to safety and high industry standards.
How to Renew Your DGA
To make the renewal process as smooth as possible, follow these simple steps:
- Check Your DGA Expiry Date
Make sure you know when your current DGA expires. This allows you to plan ahead and avoid last-minute issues. - Book Your Assessment Early
Accredited Assessment Centres are available nationwide. Be sure to schedule your assessment early to avoid delays, as these centres can get busy. - Consider completing your DGA in advance of expiry.
The DGA can be completed up to six months in advance of the expiry date and you will still benefit from the full five years duration starting from the expiry date.
- Submit Your Competency Certificate
After completing your DGA, promptly send your Competency Certificate to gasinfo@rgi.ie to update your registration. This ensures your new certification is processed quickly.

Renewing your DGA isn’t just about meeting a deadline—it’s about maintaining your professionalism and ensuring you remain a trusted expert in the industry. Don’t let your DGA expire—renew it early to stay compliant and maintain your high standards of gas safety.
Remember, compliance is key to your success and reputation as a Registered Gas Installer.
